Podcasts are a separate segment of media, audio content, which you choose at your discretion. Unlike disparate lectures or stories, this information source has more of a serial format. You can listen to the podcast from your laptop, computer, iPod, or smartphone. Modern people consume enormous amounts of information and often don’t have time for thoughtful reading.

Types of podcasts
Like movies or plays, podcasts exist for all tastes. They can be audio blogs, where one presenter talks about his or her experiences, hobbies, or third-party current affairs topics. The interview format is similar to radio shows: The guests change, but the host is the same. Podcasts are also done in the same way as talk shows: several actors talk about news, events, and ideas.

For Learning and Entertainment
There are hundreds of thousands of podcasts all over the world, and the number is growing every day. Almost all genres of media can be adapted to this format. There are recordings on everything from meditation and physics lessons to stand-up comedy, proper nutrition and crime investigation. They can be short, long, or narrative. There are music podcasts in which tracks are interrupted by the host’s words. This is the familiar format of a radio show with DJs for most people, but such recordings can be paused at any time and listened to from the moment you want.

For Business
Podcasts are attractive to small companies and startups because they don’t require a significant investment. Any smartphone or tablet has a recording function. True, a business podcast should still be pre-recorded in text format or find a responsible employee who can improvise. Small businesses have many opportunities to reach consumers and find new customers among their social media audiences. But audio messaging is easier to convey emotion and get the words right, in that text work requires more focus and constant editing. A podcast conveys tone, humor, excitement and intonation better than a blog post.

For self-expression.
People love to tell stories, which is why many people are attracted to social media. If you have a need to share valuable knowledge or funny life stories with your audience, a podcast channel will come in handy. Studies at Stanford University confirmed that information delivered in a story format increases the attention of the interlocutor (in this case, the listener) from 5-10% to 60-70%. Sometimes it is enough to talk through a situation to look at it from a different point of view, and this is a good reason to use notes for self-development. In addition, they can help for psychotherapy, even if you don’t have subscribers – keeping a diary is interesting and useful.

How podcasts differ from radio
In some ways, podcasting is similar to radio. But there are a few important differences:

• Podcasts are not broadcast on the radio airwaves, but are distributed over the Internet;
• A radio broadcast is in real time, while you can listen to a podcast online or download it, and you can pause and resume playback, go back to the beginning, or skip some parts;
• Radio shows are played according to the schedule, and you can choose your own podcasts.

Podcasts are often posted online at a certain time, which makes them similar to radio shows. Unlike radio, podcasts are convenient because they can be downloaded on almost any modern gadget – smartphone, tablet or laptop. Thus, you can listen to them if you don’t have a radio or if, for some reason, it doesn’t pick up your favorite radio station, e.g., when you’re out of town.

There are several common formats.

Monologue. One author speaks on topics that concern him or her and that interest his or her listeners.
Dialogue. A classic example is an interview in which the host asks questions of a politician, writer, businessman, or some other interlocutor.
A conversation between several people. Many variations are possible here – from a conversation between experts to a radio play or audiobook, where each character will have his own voice.

Podcasts are made on a wide variety of topics. It gives to each listener a possibility to choose what is interesting for him/her: politics and sports, cars and humor, history and advanced scientific discoveries, life of stars and actual financial news, and many-many other things.

You don’t need sophisticated, expensive equipment and a whole team of people to write, record and broadcast a podcast. All this can be done by one person. This opens up a wide space for creativity and allows talented authors to address the audience on a variety of topics.
